Attawapiskat Cellular Services
Before 2012, our community did not have even basic cell phone service. This increased safety concerns in the remote location and made it difficult for business officials and other visitors to contact people on-reserve and elsewhere.
Over the course of two years, we conducted multi-party negotiation with public and private sector companies. In April 2012, the first community-owned cell phone service was launched as Attawapiskat Cellular Services. The result was improved safety, security and quality-of-life for community members and visitors.
In late 2013, day-to-day coordination of cellphone acquisition and related issues was transferred (devolved) to Attawapiskat First Nation administration.
